Overview:

This lesson plan has been developed as part of a strategy to improve their previous skills using Google Earth to search efficiently and effectively. The students will also learn how to make and record a tour in Google Earth and save it as a .kmz file. In this specific activity students will create a tour of World Cup countries' capital cities. They will also develop their teamwork skills and how to work co-operatively in groups to complete the assigned task.

Year 4 students has worked on Google Earth program before and is familiar using this software before for different activities designed by the teacher

1: Introduction (Set)



Formative assessment of existing skills – refresh student's minds on their usage of Google Earth in the previous school year
This will enable the teacher to start off the lesson at a stage, which suits everybody’s comfort level. Asking queries regarding the previous activities completed in Google Earth

Show a brief run through of Google Earth basics and specific of creating a tour and saving the .kmz file
Presents a constructivist teaching approach, building on previous knowledge and familiarity. Involve the students and ask them about the teaching topic (e.g. names of football playing countries)

2: Classwork
Opening Google Earth and starting activity

Students get on with the task (in groups of 2) at hand with minimal instruction. The purpose of this is that students learn by trying and doing. Teacher should guides students whenever they require help. Peer-tutoring can be encouraged at this stage.

3: Finishing Up
Showing of a couple of student's work to demonstrate what they completed during Google Earth tour should look like. Letting student's know how it could be useful in other lessons.

To wrap the short class by showing one or two examples of a tour. This gives the students an indication of whether they were on the right track or not.

Special Remarks

Normally both teacher and students are used to 80 minute classes, so the timings and the manner in which we both perform our tasks may be somewhat off the normal schedule. Teacher and students alike will have to adjust their usual tempo to the shortened class time.
